Alaska-Cleveland and Okmok volcanoes

Alaska is home to the majority of US active volcanoes. The Aleutian Islands are a chain of volcanic islands extending from thr Alaskan Peninsula to the west across the Pacific ocean - Berring Sea towards Kamchatka.

A team of LDEO volcanologists, funded by the Moore Foundation, will be heading to two of these islands -- Cleveland and Okmok -- in 2021, to embark on an ambitious multidisciplinary project that looks for precursor to eruptions. The project, titled Anticipating Volcanic Eruptions in Real Time (AVERT), is set as a demonstration of the feasibility, power and potential of installing multi-sensor arrays at remote volcanoes while supporting real-time, open data sharing with the scientific community and stakeholders.
