PHYSICAL VOLCANOLOGY

Since 2011, we have been collaborating with the Lava Project laboratory at Syracuse University. At this unique facility, natural basaltic rocks are molten inside a large furnace.  The furnace is then tilted and pours out a lava flow. We have used the Lava Project facility to study the interaction of lava with topography, water, ice/snow, and to develop methods to measure flow dynamics in the field.
