CHILE

Volcan Quizapu (green star on map) in Chile is an ideal location to study one of the greatest questions in volcanology: what controls the transition from effusive lab flow eruptions to explosive eruptions?

In 2016, we visited the lava flows of Quizapu's eruption in 1864, which were then covered by pumice and ash from its 1932 explosive eruptions.

Our goal was to look at the flows' structure, and explore for any along and across flow trends in lava's properties.
