The Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, are a manifestation of the interaction between a mantle plume/hot-spot and a mid-oceanic ridge, resulting in a group of highly active volcanoes.
In 2018, Sierra Negra volcano, on the island of Isabela, erupted a sequence of large lava flows. Our team went to the volcano just a few months after the eruption with our collaborators from WHOI, U of Oregon and the Geophysical Institute of Ecuador.
Together, we mapped the flows using UAVs carrying visible and thermal cameras, and developed an algorithm for automatic classification of the deposits.
