Located on the mid-Atlantic ridge and a mantle "hot-spot", Iceland is one of the most volcanically active places in the world. Some of the largest lava flows in recent times, in particular those of Laki and Holuhraun, are located in Iceland. In 2015 we travelled to Iceland to examine the structure of these two major lava flows using aerial photography and digital topography reconstruction. At Holuhraun, we focused on the interaction between the new lava flow with river channel and the sandy plane it was traversing.
